The Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, visited today, accompanied by the mayor of Abarán, José Miguel Manzanares, the flagships of the municipality, after being declared of Cultural Interest.
Guardiola highlighted "the landscape interest of great heritage value, which has been generated over centuries of agricultural and industrial exploitation of the area, and which is also an important tourist attraction for the municipality with the Ruta de las Norias".
The Abarán waterways declared of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the category of ethnographic place of interest, constitute "a cultural and natural landscape of great wealth".
Located on the right and left banks of the Segura river, from the Menjú dam in Cieza to the Abarán iron bridge.
The 'ethnographic place' of the Abarán waterways covers three kilometers and includes the most characteristic examples of the use of water for irrigation by means of water elevators, and can be considered as a cultural landscape of traditional and historic irrigation in Vega Alta of Segura.
"Some goods to which we must add an immaterial heritage of great wealth that includes the uses, knowledge and techniques that have been generated and transmitted over the centuries," said the counselor.
The declaration includes the four ferris wheels (their aqueducts and rafts) that are preserved in the area: Noria Grande, recently restored;
the wheel of the Hoya de Don García and the Ñoricas and the del Canelón, both metallic.
Other related assets are also included, such as the El Menjú dam, the Abarán main drainage channel, Mayor de Blanca, the La Charrara ditch, the El Menjú hydroelectric power station, the "dry stone" walls called "las hormas", the splitter and aqueduct of the Las Canales area, the laundry room and the mill of the park or 'Molino de las Pilas'.
