SEALED of the BIC of the HEAD OF THE COBERTERA (Abarán / Blanca): (27/03/2019)

On January 20, 2018, the members of the Cultural Association "La Carrahila" (Abarán - Valle de Ricote) decided to create and launch the campaign Save the Cobertera Cabecico!

with the purpose of SELLAR, for the long-term conservation, the deteriorated archaeological site that exists at its summit, declared a Site of Cultural Interest with category of monument on June 28, 2017 (decree 194/2017).

One of the achievements of this campaign has been to get the municipalities of Abarán and Blanca, who share this BIC, to get involved in the purpose launched by the association, as was evident in the trialogue meeting held on June 18;

commitment materialized publicly on September 19 during the celebration of the V Meeting of "La Carrahila" (entitled "Save the Cobertera Cabecico!"), which was attended by the top councilors of Abarán and Blanca and which was staged the neighbors' concern about the mediocre situation of the archaeological site.

The archaeological site of Cabezo de la Cobertera was interpreted as a fortified granary (XII and XIII centuries) of Berber typology ("agadir") when it was systematically excavated by the Franco-Belgian archeological team formed by Johnny De Meulemmeester, François Amigues and André Matthys in the years 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Despite its remarkable importance (only fortified barn in the peninsula, whose plant structure is well defined), is in a situation of marked deterioration.

The cause is to take 30 years outdoors and subject to vandalism, not having made any conservation intervention.

The administrative relaxation has allowed the loss of height of the structures of the deposit, passing the elevations from 1 meter to only 20 centimeters in height.

If we continue in this lamentable state of abandonment, the strong wind, the torrential rains and the malice of the hand of man will eventually make this Good of Cultural Interest disappear.

The weakness of the structures contributes to this, mainly composed of plaster and stone masonry and earth walls.

The proposal of the Cultural Association "La Carrahila" is the covering of the deposit with geotextile and earth (sealed) as the only way to ensure its long-term permanence.

The action on this archaeological site has to be considered as urgent, as the technicians of the Historical Heritage Service of the CARM, the competent body, could point out, who observed the mediocre state of conservation in situ during a visit they made with the "La Carrahila "on April 13 of last year.

The commitment of the municipalities of Abarán and Blanca has been to attend the two subsidies that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has launched in recent months (orders of June 6, 2018 and February 5, 2019), presenting the project of SEALADO of the BIC of Cabezo de la Cobertera on both occasions.

The result of the first was null.

We hope that the regional administration will satisfactorily resolve this noble cause on the second occasion.

30 years without conservation measures for such a singular archaeological site are many years.

The solution to preserve the archaeological site of Cabezo de la Cobertera forever is in the hands of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

The municipalities of Abarán and Blanca can not assume, economically speaking, a responsibility that belongs to the regional administration as it is a BIC

From the Cultural Association "La Carrahila" we encourage you to act ex officio or grant the subsidy to avoid the disappearance of this Property of Cultural Interest, whose economic amount of intervention is more than ridiculous.
