The Central Union of Irrigation Aqueduct Tajo-Segura calls a demonstration in defense of the Tajo-Segura to be held in Murcia on March 18 and will depart at 17.30 from the Plaza Circular.
The goal, according to the statement, is "to defend our right to the waters of the transfer and the future of the region."
The union says that currently is pending in the House of Representatives amending the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla-La Mancha, "which allegedly contained" seriously damaging "many provisions for the transfer" and that if approved, will lead to the completion.
This question, initially scheduled for 2015, could be brought forward to late summer of 2009, which would mean "the abolition of the shipments of water needed for irrigated agriculture and the supply of stocks."
The union says the study of the situation prepared by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura establishes the loss of 147,000 hectares of irrigated land one of the most profitable of Spain, an increase in unemployment of 100,000 people in southeastern Spanish, a loss of Gross Value Added of 3,720 million euros a year, and the loss of sufficient water resources that affect human consumption.
Abarán Mayor, Antonio Eugenio Gómez, solicits the participation of citizens in the municipality for the defense of the Tajo-Segura.
