Ecologists in Action presents arguments against the expansion of the quarry 'calico' in Abarán (16/03/2010)

Chological in Action E has objected to the Environmental Impact Study Expansion Project Aggregate Quarry called "calico", located in Loma Jalmero in the municipality of Abarán (Murcia), sponsored by Concrete Construction SA Martinez

The report claims that in the future enlargement of the present four habitats of Community interest, according to Annex I to Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of the fauna and flora, vegetation on gypsophilous Iberian thyme bushes and thermophiles, mainly semi-arid areas as well as grasses and annuals subestépicas.

With regard to protected wildlife, the environmental group's report shows that there is a nesting area of Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) close, 220 meters, a raptor listed as "Special Interest", by Annex I "Wildlife Act of Murcia."

The study includes also a list of up to 24 species of fauna in the area, including at least five wildlife protection regulations, both at European, national and regional level.

It follows that the value of wildlife in the area is important, being the valuation provided by the EIS inadequate.

According to the allegations made by EA, "One of the most significant impacts will be caused on the landscape, which will be considerable, not only at the entrance to the Abarán population, but which can already be seen from the Special Zone Bird Protection and Public Monte Sierra del Oro, adding significantly to the expansion. "

Likewise, the environmental organization has requested "the completion of a binding study on how people affect air pollution by particulate matter, as might be suffering Abarán residents, since the operation currently stands at only 210 m west of the town center.

It is also noted that future expansion is directed towards the northeast, which is classified as land in the General Urban Plan of Abarán, so it is inconsistent with such zoning. "

In relation to cattle trails, Ecologists in Action reported that appropriate measures be taken to avoid prejudicing the Cañada Real de la Sierra del Oro Wash and Molar Barranco del Segura River, as the quarry is very close to paths.

Because of all the above in their arguments, the environmental association has requested "a statement adverse to the extension of the quarry."

To summarize this report, the environmental association stresses that the expansion of the quarry located in Abarán, shall entail the disappearance of several habitats of Community interest in the EU and major landscape impacts, and requested periodic measurements in the urban pollution control atmospheric emissions of particulate matter. "

Was supported by the City Council Abarán the extension of the quarry

On the other hand, Ecologists in Action requests that the Department of Environment Abarán City Council "to make public the reports it has issued and sent to the Directorate General of Mines, revealing what were the conditions for finally offering a favorable view the extension of the quarry. "
